How to do it

  1. Lie down on a decline crunch bench and secure your feet under the foot pads.
  2. Hold a weight plate or dumbbell across your chest with both hands, or behind your head (but do not pull on your neck).
  3. Place your hands lightly behind your head for support, or cross your arms over your chest if not using weight.
  4. Exhale as you slowly curl your torso upwards, contracting your abdominals. Your lower back should remain pressed against the bench.
  5. Continue to curl up until your shoulders are off the bench and your abs are fully contracted.
  6. Inhale as you slowly lower your torso back to the starting position in a controlled manner, resisting the urge to let gravity take over.
