How to do it

  1. Secure your boots into the bindings of your snowboard, typically with the lead foot (left for regular, right for goofy) positioned slightly forward.
  2. Start on a gentle slope, practicing balancing on the board. You can try 'skating' with your free foot to get a feel for movement.
  3. To move, gently shift your weight forward onto your lead foot, and begin to glide.
  4. To stop, rotate your body and board perpendicular to the slope, digging either your heel edge or toe edge into the snow. This is called a 'sideslip'.
  5. Practice making basic 'C' or 'S' turns by shifting your weight and gently rotating your hips and shoulders in the direction you want to turn, engaging either the heel or toe edge of the board.
  6. Maintain a relaxed, athletic stance with knees bent and your core engaged for stability and control.
